Here are three different ways that you can assist your dog with their recovery process in addition to following all of your vet's recovery instructions.
#1 Bring At Least Two People To Pick Up Your Dog
Do not go and pick up your dog alone if at all possible. Instead, bring someone else with you who can either drive you home with the dog or someone who knows your dog and can keep your dog calm when you drive.
The idea is that one person will drive, and the other person will sit next to the dog in the back seat of the vehicle and keep your dog clam and quiet during the ride home. This is important especially if your dog gets anxious when in the vehicle or has a hard time sitting still.
#2 Keep Your Dog In A Limited Area
When you get home, you need to limit the area where your dog can hang out. Your dog should not have free roam of the house or your yard. They need to rest and relax, and they are going to need some encouragement to do so.
When you cannot watch your dog, keep them inside of their kennel or their crate. Make sure that your kennel is well-ventilated and kept in a warm and comfortable part of your house. This will force your dog to rest and not move around as much.
When you can keep an eye on your dog, you can also confine them to a small room, such as your utility room, where your dog will have a little more room to move but still have limited ability to move around.
#3 Get A Flexible E-Collar
Your dog is going to need to wear a collar throughout their recovery process. The traditional stiff collar can be irritating for your dog, especially when they will need to wear it for a few weeks. The collar is essential because it will keep your dog from damaging their stitches and licking or chewing on the area of their leg that is healing.
A flexible e-collar will be a lot more comfortable in the long-run then a stiff and hard plastic e-collar, which is important when your dog is going to have to wear the collar for an extended period of time. Additionally, the hard collars can take up a lot of space, which can be frustrating for your dog when they are confined to their crate. A soft collar will make it easier for your dog to turn around and get comfortable in their crate or kennel. It will also help your dog stay cool and avoid overheating as it will be easier for your dog to eat and drink water with a flexible collar.
